Meet some of the furry, feathered and finned locals on a Nature Tour of New Zealand. We can plan your trip around wildlife encounters with kiwi birds, sheep, dolphins, whales and more!
From visiting a working farm to swimming with seals, we can create tours that will be treasured forever by the nature lovers in your group. Although New Zealand doesn’t have many big mammal species, our indiginous wildlife is unique and often very rare.
The kiwi bird is New Zealand’s most recognised bird and a treasured national icon. Like a few other New Zealand native bird species, kiwi are rare and are very well protected with only a few select locations where you’ll be able to see them up close.
Meet New Zealand’s national icon at the world’s largest kiwi hatchery at Rainbow Springs Nature Park.
Unique to New Zealand, tuatara are the last survivors of an order of reptiles that thrived in the age of the dinosaurs – 200 million years ago! Tuatara can live up to 100 years, and only reach adulthood around 30 years of age. Tuatara (their name is Maori for ‘peaks on the back’) hibernate in winter, but otherwise can been seen at wildlife centres around the country.
Almost half the world’s whale and dolphin species are found in New Zealand’s coastal waters and you’re likely to see them in the Bay of Islands or Kaikoura. You can also meet fur seals, albatross, little blue or yellow-eyed penguins and weta – one of the heaviest insects in the world!
The Agrodome Sheep Show outside of Rotorua is a fantastic experience for the whole family.
New Zealand is often said to be a place where sheep outnumber people, while that may be the case, the opportunities to get up close to sheep are limited as most sheep farms are privately owned. We can arrange farm visits where you can meet some of New Zealand’s famous sheep, or organise a visit to an alpaca ranch or a high country farming station where you can take a horse-riding trek.
Glow worms may be small, but their glow-in-the-dark powers are mighty.
A nature tour to New Zealand is not complete without visiting the world-famous glow worms. Explore underground caves and admire the blue glow that these little insects create – it’s a wonderful experience for all ages. Adventure seekers may also enjoy taking a black-water rafting expedition in the most famous glow worm cave system: Waitomo Caves.
